An Unforgiving Heart
"The Lord God appointed a bush, and made it come up over Jonah, to give shade over his head to save him from his discomfort; so Jonah was very happy about the bush." – Jonah 4:6
This is a very important illustration in the story of Jonah. As he sat upon the top of a mountain waiting for God to pass Judgement on Nineveh, God provided shelter for Jonah from the blistering heat. Even in spite of the fact that God had chosen to relinquish His judgement on the Ninevites, Jonah waited for it to happen and God protected him for a time from the repercussions of His prideful heart. However, in the very next verse, that protection is removed. Sometimes we need to learn a hard lesson in our spiritual walk. God is always listening and will protect us until the time is right for us to learn that lesson. This part of Jonah's story is one of those times when he needed to learn a hard lesson about forgiveness. – Commentary by Matthew Elliott
Father God, I know there will be times when I let my unforgiving heart get the best of me. I pray that when that happens You will teach me a hard lesson about Your love so that I can grow. Amen.
