Prudence is the governing natural virtue, which tells us how to live out each of the others. Saying or slyly hinting that conservative Christians should stop “voting Republican” is simply irresponsible.
Rod Dreher gets frustrated when people interpret his Benedict Option as a call for retreat from politics or evangelization or the broader culture. I say to him: This is what is bound to happen when you choose as your central metaphor St. Benedict, one of the founders of Christian monasticism.
What are Christians to do when we face so much cultural animosity? The temptation in such times is to seek comfort in a setting where it seems that enemies cannot harm us. But that defies Jesus’ own commands: “Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and salute no one on the road.” (Luke 10: 3-5).
